The Memex

In As We May Think, Bush imagined the Memex: a personal machine that could hold every book, letter, and note a person touched, linking them by association instead of rigid categories.

His central insight was that thought moves through continuous trails, while tools keep knowledge in isolated containers. The Memex would become “an enlarged intimate supplement” to memory.

J.C.R. Licklider
Man-Computer Symbiosis

Licklider argued that a true partnership could only exist if the computer remained present through the whole process of thinking, not just after a question had been neatly formed.

The machine should handle the continuous and routine while the human works in the real-time, messy middle of invention. Without continuous awareness, symbiosis was impossible.

Douglas Engelbart
Augmenting Human Intellect

Engelbart wanted to increase a person’s ability to approach complex problems by giving them an environment that held structure, history, and collective context over time.

His 1968 demonstration made the idea tangible: documents, tools, and people sharing one live frame of reference. Not a better calculator, but a system that never lost the thread.
